Under the Shade of a Bitter Orange Tree

January 2021 - June 2021

Surrounded by an overgrowth of bitter orange trees in the multicultural hub of Kypseli, my proposal for a communal social kitchen space transforms the site into a neighbourhood initiative that harvests bitter oranges to make products such as marmalade and perfume. Driven by ideas of the kitchen as the ‘parliament of the everyday’, my building acts as a political statement for the decreasing quality of food in Greece. Different migrant communities are brought together through the currency of bitter oranges. They are encouraged to access the public space at any time of the day, and lose themselves in a lavish sanctuary of bitter oranges.
