Chawanya, to my two sons and all of youth

September 2021 - December 2021

Centred around a traditional Japanese ‘Raku’ tea bowl on display at the V&A, this project celebrates the long-standing legacy of the founding Raku family, specifically the life of Kichizaemon Raku. Surrounded by the tranquil landscape of Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, London, my proposal is a series of spaces (Tea Room, Pottery Studio and Wabi-sabi Shrine) that symbolise different stages of Kichizaemon’s career. Driven by ideas of tradition, family duty, self-expression, and the uncontrollable forces of nature, the journey through each space will be a ritualistic experience whilst also exploring the intricacies of tea ceremonies and the tea bowl itself.
